What day of the week were you born?
Tonight's idea
A week is 7 days, so weekdays are clock arithmetic with a 7-hour clock. A normal year is 365 days, and \(365 = 52 \times 7 + 1\). So any date moves forward one weekday per year. If your birthday was a Tuesday this year, it is a Wednesday next year, unless a 29 February sneaks in between, which pushes it two.
Leap years. A year is really 365.2422 days, so every four years we add a day. That overshoots slightly (it gives 365.25), so century years skip the leap day, except every fourth century, which keeps it. The rule gives \(365 + \frac14 - \frac1{100} + \frac1{400} = 365.2425\) days. So 1900 was not a leap year, 2000 was, and 2100 will not be.
Doomsday. John Conway noticed that in any year, one easy date in each month lands on the same weekday, which he called that year's doomsday. Even months from April on are easy (4/4, 6/6 and so on); for odd ones remember "I work 9 to 5 at the 7-Eleven".
| Month | Jan | Feb | Mar | Apr | May | Jun | Jul | Aug | Sep | Oct | Nov | Dec |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Doomsday | 3 (4 in leap years) | last day | 14 | 4 | 9 | 6 | 11 | 8 | 5 | 10 | 7 | 12 |
Finding the doomsday. For a year in the 2000s, take the last two digits, add the number of whole times 4 goes into them, and take the remainder on dividing by 7. Count that many days on from Tuesday. In symbols, with \(yy\) the last two digits: Tuesday + \((yy + \lfloor yy/4 \rfloor) \bmod 7\), where \(\lfloor\ \rfloor\) means round down and \(\bmod 7\) means the remainder. For 2026: \(26 + 6 = 32\), and 32 leaves remainder 4. Tuesday + 4 = Saturday. Check: 4 April 2026 is a Saturday. So are 6 June, 8 August, 10 October, 12 December, 9 May, 5 September, 11 July, 7 November, and 28 February.
The \(yy/4\) part is the leap days. Each year moves things one day, each leap year one extra. For the 1900s, start from Wednesday instead of Tuesday.

Watch one: Christmas Day 2026
Doomsday for 2026 is Saturday, and 12/12 is a doomsday. 25 December is 13 days after 12 December. \(13 = 7 + 6\), so move 6 days on from Saturday (or, easier, one day back): Friday.
Another: 4 July 2026. The nearest doomsday is 11 July (7/11). 4 July is exactly 7 days earlier, so it is the same weekday: Saturday.
Your turn
- Using doomsday Saturday for 2026, find the weekday of Halloween, 31 October 2026. Then find the weekday of your own birthday in 2026, writing out the count.
- How many leap years are there from 1900 to 2100 inclusive? Count the multiples of 4, then fix the century rule. Explain in one sentence why 1900 was not a leap year.
- Compute the doomsday for 2024 and for 2000 using the formula. Then check: 29 February 2024 was a Thursday. Does that agree?
- It is a fact that every year has at least one Friday the 13th. Find all of them in 2026. Use the month table: the 13th is a Friday exactly when the month's doomsday is the 7th, 14th, 21st or 28th.
Stretch: the Moon landing
For the 1900s the anchor is Wednesday. Find the doomsday for 1969: \(69 + \lfloor 69/4 \rfloor\), then mod 7, then count from Wednesday. Then use 7/11 to find the weekday of 20 July 1969, when people first walked on the Moon.
Then do 1999 (the formula gives \(99 + 24 = 123\)), and finally your own birth date, or a parent's.
Answers
- 10 October is Saturday. 31 October is 21 days later, which is exactly three weeks, so also Saturday. Birthdays will vary; the method is: find that month's doomsday, count the days between, drop whole weeks, then step from Saturday, forward if your date is after the doomsday and back if before.
- Multiples of 4 from 1900 to 2100: \((2100 - 1900)/4 + 1 = 51\). Remove 1900 and 2100 (centuries not divisible by 400), keep 2000: \(51 - 2 = 49\) leap years. 1900 is divisible by 100 but not by 400, so the century exception removes its leap day.
- 2024: \(24 + 6 = 30\), \(30 \bmod 7 = 2\), Tuesday + 2 = Thursday. 2000: \(0 + 0 = 0\), Tuesday. The last day of February is a doomsday, so 29 February 2024 should be Thursday. It was.
- Doomsday 2026 is Saturday, so every doomsday date is a Saturday. The 13th is a Friday exactly when the month's doomsday date is the 14th, or 7 days from it (the 7th, 21st, 28th), because then the 13th is one day before a Saturday. Checking each month's doomsday: January 3rd (13th is Tuesday), February 28th (13th is Friday), March 14th (13th is Friday), April 4th (13th is Monday), May 9th (13th is Wednesday), June 6th (13th is Saturday), July 11th (13th is Monday), August 8th (13th is Thursday), September 5th (13th is Sunday), October 10th (13th is Tuesday), November 7th (13th is Friday), December 12th (13th is Sunday). Friday the 13th falls in February, March and November 2026.
Stretch. 1969: \(69 + 17 = 86\), \(86 \bmod 7 = 2\), Wednesday + 2 = Friday. So 11 July 1969 was a Friday, and 20 July is 9 days later, which is 2 days on: Sunday. (It was.) 1999: \(123 \bmod 7 = 4\), Wednesday + 4 = Sunday.
